About ICANN's New gTLD Program

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) oversees the expansion of the domain name space through its New Generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD) Program. This program allows organizations to apply for new TLDs, significantly expanding the number of available domain extensions beyond the traditional .com, .net, and .org.

The 2012 application round introduced hundreds of new TLDs. The next application round is now underway, with thousands of new domain extensions expected to enter the root zone over the coming years.

When a new TLD is approved, it goes through a structured launch process before becoming publicly available for standard registration.
